Microbiology Conference in Birmingham
Posted on: 10/04/2018BCGS was invited to attend the UK Microbiology Conference to present the findings of the Microbiology Club’s hunt for a novel antibiotic. The afterschool group which comprises of Y11 to Y13 students had used organisms found in the pond mud around the BCGS pond to find antibiotic secreting colonies. Our lead colony has been already found in Korea and is used there to preserve rice.
The School was represented by Harry and Robert and accompanied by Mrs Hayles at the Conference which was held in Birmingham. The poster stimulated a great deal of interest amongst academics as it was only one of 2 which was from Sixth Form students. Many thanks to Roisin in Y11 for compiling the artwork on the poster.
We wish to thank Dr R Masterson of the Bioscience Dept, University of Kent and her colleagues for their support with this project.
